I like to read headlines. Just headlines, because I’ve convinced myself that I don’t have enough time to read the full story (which is far from the truth.) Lately there has been a lot of cop bashing. In fact, out of the top ten articles under Reddit’s /r/news section, 7 are about cops. Seventy percent. That’s a lot. I will preface this by saying yes, there are some cops that don’t play by the rules. There are some cops who were endlessly harassed in high school and they joined the police academy to implement their power-tripping regime because shitty teenagers made fun of them for having pimples. Peter Peter Pizza Face, face so ugly he should be maced. Now they have this John McClain Die Hard mentality against the world, seeking vengeance on every pizza parlor in town.
But most cops are moral, just individuals. I know a lot of cops, because I’m a hoodlum. They are good folks. I’m sure you, the supremely bored reader, know a cop or two. They are great people. They have the balls/ovaries to risk their lives every day so that I can write articles (articles? Really? Who are you trying to impress? This isn’t the New York Times, this is a blog, you write blogs) without worrying about a serial rapist.
So why the cop bashing? Our society is debating over Eric Garner and Ferguson, which is understandable, but of those seven articles I mentioned, one was about Eric Garner. Six articles about cops, completely unrelated to those two events.
Damn, if I’m an outdated means of conveying information and current events, I am licking my chops. Because this means that as a media outlet, I can pile on and ANY cop story will get attention which means I, the outlet, get PAID AND LAID! HENNESSY AND STRIPPERS FOR ALL! (Meta side note: Mitch, you are writing a article blog about media outlets piling on. Aren’t you, yourself, piling on too?)
So many people are consumed by the hype that they forget to take a step back and think “maybe this isn’t the way it really is.” These media outlets need to make money. Have you ever needed money? (Oh you haven’t, fuck you.) People, and especially businesses, can attain a “by any means necessary” demeanor if they need to. So to make money, they stir the pot with such whirling force that it begins to brainwash people.
We need to realize what the news is now. It’s a cry for money. COP RUTHLESSLY MURDERS CIVILIAN is the headline today. Holy shit, that’s horrible, cops are the root of all evil! (They always forget to mention the civilian was manning a turret in front of a retirement home.) Did you happen to look at the headline from the day before?: JESSICA SIMPSON WEARS LEGGINGS FROM TARGET, JUST LIKE US!
This is what it is.
Stay updated on current events, but realize you may need to pierce the veil of bullshit from time to time. You know how patronizing 40-somethings always say you can’t believe everything you read on the Internet? That is the same approach that should be taken with every media outlet. Image may be NSFW.
